Water-Based Lubricant: How to Choose and Use It

Lubricant is the least glamorous purchase on an intimate-products site and the one people most often get wrong. Water-based is the safe default for most situations.

## Why water-based

- Compatible with everything. Silicone products, TPE products and condoms. Silicone-based lubricant, by contrast, can degrade silicone toys.
- Easy to clean. Rinses with water.
- Skin-friendly. Fewer ingredients than most alternatives.

The trade-off is that water-based lubricant dries out faster, so you may need to reapply.

## Thicker is not automatically better

Formulas vary in viscosity. A thicker gel stays put longer and suits longer sessions; a thinner liquid spreads more easily and feels lighter. Neither is better — match the product to the use.

## What to avoid

- Flavoured formulas for internal use. Sugar and flavourings can irritate. Flavoured gel is for external use.
- Anything you react to. Patch test on your forearm first, especially with a new brand.
- Silicone lubricant with silicone toys. It can damage the surface.

## Using it well

1. Apply a small amount and add more as needed.
2. Reapply rather than using a lot at once — it feels better and wastes less.
3. Close the bottle properly. Water-based formulas attract dust.
4. Check the expiry date. Thickening is a sign it has turned.

## Sizes

A small single-use pack is enough to try a formula. A 60ml bottle is the practical everyday size and lasts a long time. For travel, choose a container that closes securely — a full-size bottle leaking in a bag is a mistake people only make once.
